I dropped the multiplier a bunch of times too, so there's a reasonable amount of room for error. I managed to hit 3000 pts on my 89th basket so there's room for error. Resetting also sometimes drops a red barrels first which is nice but I never got it to happen consistently. I'd say if you haven't hit 600 by 20 throws then consider resetting (button to your right). If your are getting 300pts every 10 throws you're on pace. Unless you are insanely lucky or can lock down an unknown pattern to the hoop, you WILL lose the multiplier a few times and that's okay. It is better to lose the multiplier than miss a shot, especially when it comes to the red barrels. When the new barrel falls in front of you, it's position will dictate it's trajectory (try to go for when the barrel hits the ground, if you hit it while it's in the air it'll sail high and can cause you to miss a basket) This is not recommended to attempt as there doesn't appear to be any pattern for the hoop speed and you'll likely need the extra time to process the hoop speed. Note: if you are a god or feel risky, I found if you hit the basket as the hoop moves from left to right, you won't lose the multiplier when it touches the piston again. To maintain a multiplier, you must make a basket before it completes one cycle (starts left at piston, bounces off wall to right, then touches the piston again). Each consecutive basket adds a multiplier capping at 4x The scoring is a bit buggy sometimes but normally yellow barrels count as 1pt and red barrels are 25pts So there's a little bit of luck when it comes to the speed of the hoop because at it's fastest speed the barrel won't fall fast enough for you to make a shot on it unless you anticipate it correctly and you'll end up missing or lose your multiplier (I couldn't anticipate it anyways).
